Need Reminding to Take Your Medicine?

February 23, 2006

The Medicine Reminder Initiative

Launched in Staffordshire in June 2005 by David Kidney MP, this is a new service now available from Stafford and Rural Homes!   It's the first time that electronic prompting has been used in Britain and the first time such widespread collaboration has taken place between health, social care and housing professionals in the area.

Rebecca Bowley, Supporting People and Service Development Manager said:  "This is an exciting step forward in the services we offer.  We can now really help customers to manage their medicines effectively, without the need for frequent visits from a carer.  The use of these technology-based services are making a real difference to people's lives, and this is only the beginning".

Who can get the service?

The scheme is suitable for people who tend to forget to take their medicines and have already tried reminder charts and dossette boxes. They should have medicines which are stable and that they are comfortable taking. There is no age limit although the scheme is targeted at older and vulnerable people.

The scheme is not suitable for those who:

  • Do not understand English
  • Have problems with hearing
  • Are often out when it is time to take their medicine
  • Do not have a stable dosing regime
  • Have difficulty opening containers and administering the right dose
  • Are very confused and cannot understand instructions for taking medicines
