Medicine Reminder Service

What is it?

The Medicine Reminder Initiative is designed to help you get the most out of your medicines and remain independent in your home.  It is the first time that electronic prompting has been used in Britain and is a collaboration between Healthcare, Social Services and housing providers in Staffordshire, launched by David Kidney MP in June 2005.   Go to the News page for more details.

The service is delivered through a combination of:

  • An assessment of medicines management needs by domiciliary pharmacists.

  • Ongoing support in medicine taking, including the use of assistive technology.

A special Lifeline alarm unit is used to prompt you to take your medicines at the right time.  The unit simply plugs into your existing telephone line and power socket and will be programmed to remind you of any medication you need to take according to your individual plan.

How does the reminder system work?

You will hear the Lifeline alarm unit chime at the time you are due to take your medication. When you hear the chime you should press a flashing button on the unit.  You will then hear a message telling you what medication you should take. Once you have taken your medication, you simply press the second flashing button to advise our Control Centre you have taken it.

If you do not press the button to say you have taken your medication, our Control Centre will speak to you through the speaker on the Lifeline unit to find out if you are alright or if you are having problems with your medication.
