Can I alter or Improve my home?

You have the right to alter and improve your home. However, we also have an interest in your home and a responsibility to other tenants. Therefore to carry out some improvements you will need to write to us and ask for permission.  You may also need to get planning permission and building regulations approval before starting any work. We would not refuse permission unless we have a good reason, which we would write and tell you about.

Its important you do not do anything likely to damage the structure of the building or cause damage to shared services (such as plumbing to the roof tank, doorframes, walls, windows, electricity or gas supplies, or sewerage). 

There is no need to ask for permission to carry out Minor works such as decorating however its important to remember that even minor works can cause noise and potential disruption to your neighbours. 

What sort of alterations do I need permission for?

Any addition or change to the structure.

  • Aerials or satellite dishes.
  • Outside decoration (the type of paint may need approving so that its compatible with future paints that we may use.
  • The outside window frames – these belong to us.  You must not replace your windows unless we have given you written permission.

The above is only a sample list and you should always consult your lease before making any alterations to your property.

In most cases a Notice of Landlords Consent will be issued, though in some cases Building Consent or Planning Permission will also be required and the works must comply with any stated conditions.
