Buying your Home

You can apply to buy your home under the Preserved Right to Buy scheme, the Right to Acquire scheme and the Voluntary Right to Buy Pilot.

Preserved Right to Buy

You may qualify for the Preserved Right to Buy if both the following points apply to you:

  • Your home used to be owned by Stafford Borough Council before it was transferred to Stafford and Rural Homes (SARH) while you were living in it.
  • You have remained a tenant of SARH without any breaks.

If eligible, you may be able to buy your home at the market value less a percentage discount based on the length of your tenancy. As of 6 April 2019, the maximum discount amount is £82,800.

There are several reasons you may not be able to buy your home, these are:

  • Your home is designed or has been adapted for the elderly or disabled
  • You live in sheltered housing where services are provided
  • Your home is provided as part of your job
  • You have legal problems with debt
  • The courts have made a possession order for you to leave your home
  • Your home is to be demolished

You can find out more about the Preserved Right to Buy by visiting the Government website.

If you wish to apply, please contact rtb@sarh.co.uk

Right to Acquire

If you do not have a Preserved Right to Buy, you may still be able to buy your home under the scheme called Right to Acquire.

If eligible, you may be able to buy your home at the market value less £9,000 (this is the amount set by Government for Staffordshire).

You can apply to buy your home if you have had a public sector landlord for 3 years. These landlords include:

  • Housing Associations
  • Councils
  • Armed Services

You do not have the Right to Acquire your home if:

  • Your home is in an exempt area
  • A court has ordered you to leave your home
  • You are or are being made bankrupt

You can find out more information about Right to Acquire by visiting the Government website.

If you wish to apply, please contact rtb@sarh.co.uk

Voluntary Right to Buy Pilot

In August 2018, the Government launched a Voluntary Right to Buy (VRTB) pilot for Housing Associations in the Midlands Area.

This pilot is now closed to new applications and no further information about whether the pilot will re-open is currently available.

Applications submitted before the closure date are being processed in accordance with our VRTB policy.
