Events to encourage older people to stay active

Posted on 20th September 2010

PEOPLE aged over 55 in Stafford are being urged to get fitter and healthier.

Stafford and Rural Homes is promoting health and well-being in the borough and raising awareness of advice on offer to older people at a series of open days at five of its Independent Living schemes.

The events – which will include board games, craft stalls, fitness and healthy eating classes, plus talks from partner organisations – are to celebrate UK Older People’s Day on Friday, October 1.

Paul Buckley, Independent Living Co-ordinator for SARH, said: “Being active and social as you get older can really help you to stay physically and mentally healthy and I hope the range of activities and advice on offer at our open days will be fun and informative for everyone that takes part.”

Partners offering tips include health trainers, the women’s branch of the British Legion, Staffordshire Fire Service, Age Concern, Staffordshire Police, Stafford and Stone Lions, and Staffordshire Mobile Library.

All events will take place over two days from Thursday, September 30 to Friday, October 1 at the following times and venues:

September 30
Jubilee Court – 9.00am to 12.00pm
Shakespeare Road – 1.00pm to 4.00pm

October 1
Tithe Barn Court – 9.00am to 12.00pm
Marston Court – 1.00pm to 4.00pm
Sycamore Road – 1.00pm to 4.00pm

A number of activities will also be taking place at SARH’s other schemes across the borough to mark the celebrations.

For more information on the events please contact SARH’s Independent Living Team on 0800 111 4334.
