Good Neighbour Award 2011

Green fingered Roy Cooper has helped keep his neighbourhood blooming with his love of gardening.

Since moving to Longhope Drive in Walton when his wife died two years ago, Roy has helped his neighbours with their gardens and worked on a pergola to brighten up the Independent Living Scheme.

Now Roy’s efforts have been recognised with Stafford and Rural Homes’ Good Neighbour Award.

The award asks SARH customers to put forward neighbours that go the extra mile to improve the lives of others in the community.

Roy, aged 63, said: “If anyone on Longhope Drive needs help with their gardens or anything else I always try to lend a hand.  I’ve always loved being outdoors in the garden so to be recognised in these awards for doing something I enjoy is just amazing.”

Residents of Longhope Drive nominated Roy for the award because he always makes time to help others, despite working full time at Katharine House Hospice.  They said if anyone needs anything delivering or moving Roy is always on hand and is always pleasant and approachable.

Roy was presented with the honour at SARH’s AGM on Thursday, September 15.

SARH Chief Executive Karen Armitage congratulated Roy on the positive difference he is making in his neighbourhood: “Roy is a great example a good neighbour who is prepared to go the extra mile for others.  It is people like this who help to make our communities great places to live.”
