Help at hand for would-be litter pickers

Stafford residents are being encouraged to keep their neighbourhood tidy.

Stafford and Rural Homes and Stafford Borough Council’s Streetscene team are loaning litter pickers and providing bags to help customers keep the streets free from rubbish.

Neil Robison, a 43-year old SARH customer from Western Downs, who is backing the project, said: “It is important that whole community gets involved in keeping their local area tidy so I hope there is a positive response from the public.

“Litter is one of those things that people are sometimes reluctant to do anything about so over time it almost becomes accepted.

“A lot of people look to the council to do all the clearing up when they could easily spend a few minutes doing a bit of tidying themselves. I hope this trial scheme will help to change this attitude by making it easier for everyone to get involved.”

The bags and litter pickers are available for customers to loan from Stafford and Rural Homes’ housing advice shops in Stafford and Stone as well as Streetscene’s headquarters.

Neil had requested more resources were made available to help customers tidy up the community and SARH and SBC were keen to help.

Anna McLauchlan, SARH Neighbourhoods Project Officer, said: “When Neil suggested to our neighbourhood services team we should provide equipment for any customers to pick up litter we thought it was a brilliant idea and were really keen to see what we could do.

“The scheme is really all about helping customers take pride in where they live and play and to encourage them to take a role in keeping their neighbourhood tidy.”

Councillor Stan Highfield, Cabinet member for environment and health at Stafford Borough Council, said: “It is brilliant how so many of our residents take a real pride in their area. On a number of occasions we have been able to help local people and community groups with their efforts to keep our beautiful borough clean and tidy. If anyone would like advice, or to find out what assistance we can give them, please contact us.”
