National Housing Federation chief opens new Extra care scheme in Stafford
THE chief executive of the national housing federation (NHF) David Orr has met customers living at SARH Extra care scheme in Stafford.
Mr Orr was invited to the official reopening of Jubilee Court, on Edison Road, which is run by Stafford and Rural Homes and has recently undergone a £2.4 million redevelopment.
The NHF represents 1,200 not-for-profit housing associations in England and campaigns for better housing and neighbourhoods.
“The impressive regeneration project to transform Jubilee Court into a modern extra care scheme for the local people of Stafford is a shining example of what is possible when local organisations work in partnership.
“I am extremely impressed with what I have seen during my visit and I hope to see more successful projects like this across the country,” said Mr Orr.
During his visit Mr Orr met the customers whose previously small flats have been converted into a modern, extra care facility that includes 34 spacious one and two bedroom apartments, with fully-fitted kitchens and a range of adaptations.
One customer is 74-year-old Pat McMillan who has lived at Jubilee Court since 2002 and has recently moved back into a completely new flat after the regeneration.
“I enjoyed living at Jubilee Court before the work took place but l love it even more now because my new flat is much more spacious and modern.
“I also love the new communal facilities here because it gives me the chance to chat and socialise with my friends,” said customer Pat.
The transformation of the former sheltered scheme has been achieved through many successful partnerships headed by SARH, Staffordshire County Council, and Frank Haslam Milan, with care provided by Radis.
Karen Armitage, chief executive of SARH, said: “The regeneration of Jubilee Court aims to give customers with support needs the chance of greater independence in their own home. This is just part of the ambitions SARH has to provide high quality housing choices for our older customers
“On behalf of SARH and our partners I’m delighted to welcome Mr Orr to officially reopen the new development which is a fantastic example of investment in modern sheltered housing.”
