SARH launches new programme of free learning

A new programme of free learning courses, workshops and taster sessions for Stafford residents has been launched by Stafford and Rural Homes.

SARH has unveiled its latest Community Learning Programme, which includes 55 free sessions being delivered across Stafford Borough throughout the year to help people into employment, improve health and wellbeing, encourage people to meet others or pick up a new skill or hobby.

“The Community Learning Programme is now in its sixth year and we are delighted to build on the success of previous years to offer a wider range of courses than ever before,” said Christine Cartwright, Community Involvement Officer at SARH.

The Programme kicks off with a ‘How to find the Right Job for You’ course on Thursday, January 24, between 1pm and 4pm at Rising Brook Fire Station.

Other courses range from CV Writing and Interview Skills to Basic Gardening Skills, Glass Painting and Tai Chi.  Accredited courses include Retail and Customer Services, First Aid and a Level 2 Award in Healthier Food and Special Diets.

More sessions for children have also been introduced in the school holidays such as Football Skills in partnership with Stoke City FC Community Trust.

“The sessions are free and open to anyone regardless of experience or ability so we would encourage everyone to have a go at something,” said Christine.

The courses are run with the support of partners including Stafford Borough Council, Staffordshire County Council and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Other organisations supporting the programme include the Penkside Community Champions, Chase Against Crimes of Hate (CACH), B&Q Stoke-on-Trent, Whitebeam Holistic, Aid Training & Operations Ltd, Basix Training, Engage Associates and Healthbox.

Since SARH first launched the Community Learning Programme in 2008 it has hosted more than 180 courses with more than 1,000 customers attending them.

One customer to benefit from the programme is Liz Lomax, who has attended several sessions including CV Writing and Interview Skills, Zumba and Reiki.

“I have found the sessions really enjoyable but in particular the CV Writing and Interview Skills course really helped me. I hadn’t updated my CV in 10 years and by the end of the session I had a brand new CV ready to hand out,” said Liz.

“Within one week of attending the session I secured a part-time job as a Care and Activities Assistant at a Private Care Home near to where I live. I would definitely recommend others to go on these courses, they have given me the confidence to go out and get a job and I’ve got my independence back.”
